The name "Melukote" translates from Kannada, meaning "fort on the top," where "Melu" refers to the top and "Kote" signifies a fort. Positioned atop a rocky hill named Yadugiri, Melukote, also known as Thirunarayanapuram, serves as a revered pilgrimage site in Karnataka.
Historical records suggest that in the 12th century, the revered Vaishnava saint, Sri Ramanujacharya, resided here for 14 years, elevating the site's prominence and establishing it as a crucial center for Vaishnavism. However, the temple's origins predate Sri Ramanujacharya's visit.
The Melkote temple complex comprises various sections, including two primary temples, a Sanskrit library, a step-well pond, and more. The principal temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and known as Thirunarayana or Cheluvaraya, was originally established by Lord Krishna and is now under the patronage of the Mysore Royal family, the Wodeyars.
